How do you prefer your pancakes?

I asked a group of innkeepers how they like prefer their pancakes, thin or thick?

Best answer was "with lots of maple syrup!"

Lesson to self: Be prepared for the answer you are not expecting when you ask innkeepers a question. Now get back to business...and remember, bed and breakfast inns are a better way to stay!

New Year's Weekend at the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B in Shepherdstown, WV

With New Year's Eve on a Saturday this year, and most folks getting that Monday as a holiday, you have the perfect opportunity to take advantage of our first ever New Year's weekend package. Book for two nights (either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday), any room, and enjoy the usual comforts of the Inn - our cozy rooms, spacious common areas, and convenient in-town location.

In addition, we'll gift you with two tickets to the New Year's Eve show of the Hillbilly Gypsies at the Shepherdstown Opera House, a welcome cheese plate in your room, an extended brunch buffet on Sunday morning from 8:30 to 10:30 (with our usual early Hypnocoffee service starting at 7:00) and a late checkout of noon on either Sunday or Monday. If you decide not to check out the show at the Opera House, we'll have a sparkling wine toast in the Inn's living room when the ball drops at midnight in front of the fireplace.
It's not too late to make your reservations; call us or book online now.

Finally starting a blog for your inn?

Here are the answers to some FAQ's about Inn Blogging
Guest blog by David Pearce from TRIPPO INC "An Inn Marketing Agency"

1. Should my blog be a separate entity or integrated into my website?

Both ways will benefit your business by driving additional traffic, however, I would strongly recommend hosting the blog on your own domain. The reason is simple, SEO. If you're going to spend the time (and it does take time) creating unique content for your blog then you want to make sure you're getting the credit for it.

The Mini Bar Stops Here!

LIFE IS TOO SHORT FOR BAD COFFEE!
If you have stayed at The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast in Virginia or seen our online marketing you have seen our slogan.

We have also tried to let you know that bed and breakfasts, unlike most hotels, do not serve gas station coffee! You know the coffee of which I speak, that sitting on the burner all day-heartburn inducing-foul taste on your tongue-black tar. The Claiborne House breakfast blend is a Dark Sumatra (rich and full in body but not bitter and pungent and low on acid) and you can have more than one cup, so FILLER UP OLD SPORT!

It Ain't Over until the Last One Drops!

Yogi Berra said, "It ain't over until the fat lady sings." Well it is true with the leaf season - it ain't over until the last leaf drops - at least here in West Virginia. Yes, we are past peak - our tress are no longer wearing their "Saturday night date clothes". But while some were getting ready for that Saturday night date, there were some who were like many people, "late bloomers" still wearing their green until they were darned good and ready to change.

This is not a frat house, keep your pants on!

Disclaimer - as the admin of this blog I want to allow you a moment of tongue in cheek innkeeping with Agnes. She speaks her mind and no one can corral her. The opinions/commentary posted here do not represent me or any other innkeepers. So take that for what it is worth and to each his own style. She is not trying to be offensive (I don't think) I actually spawned the topic on twitter. -Shellie.

After checking my twitter account I saw some tweets by the innkeeper I call Virginia and it made me wonder "How many people think that staying in a B&B is like staying in someone's house? How many think it is like staying in their own house?"

Riding the Ridges of Beauty

We of the Gillum House Bed and Breakfast in Shinnston, West Virginia took a ride on US Rte 250 North from Fairmont, West Virginia to Moundsville on the Ohio River and then WV Rte 2 North to Wheeling. It is beautiful in a car but it is a road that motorcycle riders love. As one "serious" motorcyclist put it, "It is just the right mix of scenery and technical riding." In the City of Hundred, one can turn left on Rush Run Road and drive across the Fish Creek Covered Bridge. Go back to Rte 250, turn left and continue north.

EAT A DAWG – It’s a NASCAR Tradition

Martinsville Hotdogs - Claiborne House B&B
Strawberries and cream at Wimbledon? A mint julep at the Kentucky Derby?  You can't call yourself a true NASCAR fan until you have bravely downed a Martinsville Speedway hot dog in Virginia.   The hot dog, a trademark at the half-mile paperclip track since who-knows-when, is one thing you don't mess with at a track known for heated tempers and bent sheet metal.   It's still a dog like no other, packed with cheese, onion, coleslaw and chili on a bun that melts in your mouth. The cholesterol-crammed delicacy is legendary at NASCAR's oldest track, a food tradition that has filled the stomachs of fans, drivers and crew members for more than 60 years.  "Yeah, I eat about three or four a day," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said when asked about how he dines on a Martinsville race weekend.

Fleeting Moments

It's been raining for days. I don't mind the rain; in fact I quite enjoy the cool rainy days of fall. But when the sun comes out after days of rain and quite suddenly and unexpectedly a rainbow appears, it's utterly breathtaking! This rainbow lasted for only a few moments, but in those moments I could not look away. Pure perfection.

BnBs and Inns Give International Thank You

At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month Armistice was declared, ending World War I. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 as Armistice Day to honor World War I Veterans. In 1938, Armistice Day became a legal holiday in the United States.

In 1953, Al King, a shoe store owner in Emporia, Kansas began an effort to make November 11 honor ALL Veterans and in 1954, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day.

Members of the West Virginia Bed & Breakfast Association chose to show their appreciation to Veterans by providing at least one room on Nevember 10, 2009 to anyone with a valid Military ID - showing the ID was payment for that night. November 10 was chosen so the Veteran and guest would be on-site for any activities on Veterans Day, November 11.

In 2010, West Virginia invited bed & breakfasts and inn "from sea to shing sea" to join them. By November 10, 2010, 900 B & Bs and Inns in the United States, 11 in Canada, 2 in Mexico, and one each in Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Paris, France, and Namibia were participating in B & Bs For Vets to show gratitude and appreciation to the military - past and present - for keeping freedom alive. Each participaring inn provided a minimum of one room FREE OF CHARGE on the night of November 10 to anyone providing a Military or Veterans Administration ID. It also gave the opportunity to thank the "unsung heroes", the spouses and partners of the Veterans who shoulder all the responsibilities on the homefront during deployments or a war.

November 10, 2011, participating innkeepers are again offering B & Bs For Vets. BBCanada is also honoring their military with B & Bs For Vets Canada.

To locate a participating B & B or Inn in the United States go to http://www.bnbsforvets.org/ and in Canada go to www.bbcanada.com/bbforvets.

Make Musical Memories Traveling West on The Crooked Road

AUTUMN ON THE CROOKED ROAD

Make Musical Memories Traveling West on The Crooked Road

The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, winding through the ruggedly beautiful Appalachian Mountains, leads you to the major hotspots of bluegrass, old time, and traditional American mountain music. This amazing fall getaway will create memories you'll treasure for a lifetime, beginning in Ferrum and ending in Damascus.

CR2.jpg

Day 1:

Begin your getaway touring the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum at Ferrum College. They promote a special understanding of regional folklife through the music and arts of the Blue Ridge - it's a great start to gear you up for the rest of the getaway. Floyd is 45 minutes west of Ferrum. It's the home of traditional bluegrass, old time music and dancing. One of the "must-see's" along The Crooked Road is the famed Floyd Country Store, home of the Friday Night Jamboree.
Check your calendar! You might just be traveling through Patrick County during one of their festivals this fall. It's about a 40 minute drive from Floyd to Stuart and you're guaranteed one of the most beautiful drives of your lifetime! Once in Stuart, check out some of the region's NASCAR racing history at Wood Brothers Racing Museum and Virginia Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Picky Boomers like B&B's

Big occasion? Inns ready to pamper you

When my husband and I are getting ready to mark a big wedding anniversary or birthday, I scout out places to celebrate. Once, I chose to rough it in a tiny tool shed of a cottage at a wildlife refuge for retired circus animals. That was a wild night, and not in a good way. (Lions moaned all night!)
We're more persnickety about accommodations now. We like 300 thread count sheets, fluffy pillows and Gilchrist & Soames shampoo. We wouldn't think of turning down turndown service.

Hey Virginia, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know...

THAT THE CLAIBORNE HOUSE ROCKS!
Pickin' on the porch at The Claiborne House B&B
We were privileged to have Bill Hunt join us on the porch for an impromptu jam session here at The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast. Bill works for NASA and grew up locally here in Penhook and is a graduate of Franklin County High School.
