Maine lighthouses epitomize the soul's searching for light in the darkness. The siren song to the sailor from shore. Even those who live nowhere near the sea recognize the beacon beckoning to them from afar.
Come celebrate the hundreds of years of service by Maine lighthouses (the first one was commissioned by George Washington!) on Maine Lighthouse Day- September 17, 2011. Lighthouses up and down the coast are open for tours.
If one day is not enough for you, many Maine lighthouses are viewable from the shore any day of the year and some are open for limited tours during the summer. Boat tours are available during the summer season.
