Riding the Ridges of Beauty

We of the Gillum House Bed and Breakfast in Shinnston, West Virginia took a ride on US Rte 250 North from Fairmont, West Virginia to Moundsville on the Ohio River and then WV Rte 2 North to Wheeling. It is beautiful in a car but it is a road that motorcycle riders love. As one "serious" motorcyclist put it, "It is just the right mix of scenery and technical riding." In the City of Hundred, one can turn left on Rush Run Road and drive across the Fish Creek Covered Bridge. Go back to Rte 250, turn left and continue north.

In Summer, the shades of greens mixed with the rocks on the cuts edging the road in places make it a lovely drive. And when you get to the top of each ridge, looking across you see valleys and ridges - 5 or 6 ridges away. And when you think you must be at the top, there is another 9% grade into the valley so you can climb another and ride along looking across at even more ridges.

In the Fall, there is a mix of green fields and pastures and stands of trees leading to the hills and ridges of color in the distance. The yellows and oranges dotted with reds and some green for contrast is pure beauty. The Fall colors frame barns and out buildings in this very rural area.

As if the beauty of this route was not enough to make this drive, in Wheeling there are several excellent places to see and do. The Kruger Street Toy & Train Museum, Independence Hall - where the State of West Virginia was born, Capitol Theater, the Suspension Bridge (I remember this bridge to Wheeling Island when it had a WOOD floor, now steel grid), Oglebay Park, the Madonna of the Trail - a monument to the women who braved the frontier with their families, and then Centre Market! The old Railway Express buildings are now small booth shops and most important, the home of Coleman's Fish Market. One can not only purchase a vast assortment of fresh fish and seafood, it also has the best sandwiches - whitefish or pollock, oyster, crab cake and more. Do not stay away if you are on a low-fat diet. Coleman's has a steamed fish (large portion) with rice and steamed veggies meal. Eat in, take out, or dine alfresco at the tables between the 2 buildings of Centre Market. Have a wonderful piece of pie or ice cream for dessert from the booths across from each other in the building next to the Fish Market. It does not get any better than this!
