Spend Your Special Night With Us!

The “Mini-Moon” Honeymoon Trend Continues

May 23, 2011 by Donna Heiderstadt
If you are getting married soon and plan to take off for just a few days after your wedding on a “mini-moon,” you are not alone. An estimated 30 percent of couples getting married in the next 12 months who know their honeymoon plans say they plan to take a honeymoon lasting just a few days right after the wedding, rather than a traditional week-long or longer one, according to a recent survey by BedandBreakfast.com.

Both budget and time constraints among just-married couples are contributing to the “mini-moon” trend. “The survey confirmed that most newlyweds will take a several day mini-moon rather than not taking a honeymoon at all,” says Martin Slagter, vice president of HomeAway, Inc., which owns BedandBreakfast.com, a website showcasing 11,000 B&Bs and inns worldwide.

Rhode Trip Idea in Blue Ridge Virginia!

Bloomin' gorgeous, and where to see wild rhododendrons

For sheer drama, nothing beats the spectacle of Southwest Virginia's wild rhododendrons in blossom.

Rhodies along the Blue Ridge Parkway
It's that time again -- when these Southern Appalachians put on one of their two most spectacular shows of the year. The other, of course, comes in the fall, when the hillsides become a colorful abstract canvas, drawing visitors from around the world.
Springtime is rhododendron time.
Spring in the mountains has other charms, from the pastel colors of early April to the balmy afternoons of June. But for sheer, over-the-top spectacle, nothing compares to thousands of wild rhododendrons in bloom.

Excerpt:
Mabry Mill
One of the best -- and easiest -- places to see the late-blooming rosebay rhododendron is along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Mabry Mill. The rhododendrons in those parts typically start blooming late in June, although times vary. The equally spectacular flame azaleas, which are also considered rhododendrons by plant taxonomists, bloom orange on this stretch of the parkway in early May, James said.
"That is just a glorious display," he said.
One sure-fire way to find out what's blooming up there is to call Mabry Mill and ask. 276-952-2947.

Filmed at 1000fps on a Phantom HD Gold camera, "Breakfast Interrupted" is a joy for eyeballs and bellies alike. Even better: the boys at Bruton Stroube Studios even put together a making of-video, for those interested in how the (slow-motion flying) sausage is made: Click here.

As innkeepers we find this delightful as we want to portray breakfast as the most important and delicious meal, it is the OTHER B at our Bed and Breakfast and we take it seriously!

Did you know an Innkeeper innvented Chocolate Chip Cookies?

A Very Tasty Accident…

chocolate chips cookiesphoto © 2009 Tim Lewis | more info (via: Wylio)

Chocolate chip cookies seem like a classic part of American baking like the apple pie, but actually these delicious cookies were not invented until 1933. Ruth Graves Wakefield was the woman who brought us these delectable treats. Built on the outskirts of Whitman, MA in 1709 as a collection booth for the toll road, Mr. & Mrs. Wakefield acquired the building in 1930 and transformed it into a restaurant and inn.  The newly renamed Toll House Inn was a charming respite for weary travelers, boasting comfortable lodgings along with homemade meals and fresh baked goods.
Ruth Wakefield’s favorite cookie recipe was the Butter Drop cookies. One day as she was making the batter for these cookies, she discovered she was out of powdered baker’s chocolate. She decided to substitute broken pieces of a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar. She expected the chocolate to melt and absorb into the batter therefore creating chocolate cookies. The chocolate did not melt, but instead held its shape and became soft and creamy. These new cookies called Toll House Crunch Cookies by Wakefield became an instant hit with guests of the inn.

Have you encountered something amazing at a Bed and Breakfast Inn? Perhaps they have innvented something special that you thought came from "an innkeepers handbook" which of course does not exist!  We make what our guests innjoy, it is that simple. Have you ever been a guinea pig at a B&B? You may have not even known you were.

Myths of a Bed and Breakfast

Working at Castle in the Country has completely changed my perspective on the B&B industry.
Many in my age group (mid 20′s) would never consider a B&B because the first thing that comes to mind is “Grandma’s house” and being forced into small talk at a community breakfast table.  Boy were we wrong! Let me try to dispell a few of these myth’s for you.
1)Myth: B&B’s have shared bathrooms.  Fact: It is much more common these days for B&B’s to have all private bathrooms. Each one of our ten guest rooms at Castle in the Country has its own private bath, stocked with luxurious bath products, and either a single person, or two person shower.   All of our suites also have2 person whirlpool tubs where you can watch your fireplace or watch a movie from your flat screen tv.
Michigan B&B says Luxury and Private Baths are what we are about!
2)Myth: We have to share common space with the Innkeepers, and we’ll be forced into small talk, and we won’t have any privacy. Fact: While Ruth Herb and myself all live on property and we call these two big houses home, we do have our own private quarters in each house. We want our guests to feel that they have privacy and that they can come and go throughout the houses as they please. However, we are always here or around the property somewhere and are more than happy to talk should our guests want to.

Remembering a Bed and Breakfast Legend

Jane Way dies at 91; Sutter Creek Inn owner

Jane Way turned an 1859 Gold Rush-era cottage into an early bed and breakfast in the western United States. Her firm attitude toward guests sometimes ran counter to what was expected in the hospitality industry.

I would like to add that you will find many innkeepers began the journey owning an inn due to some monumental turn in their lives, we all have a story to tell! Some more innteresting than others, but we all have a story!  I hope you can innjoy a bed and breakfast soon. They are the "Better way to stay!" full of personality, charm and character.
