B & Bs For Vets - A Thank You

In 2008, the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast in Shinnston, West Virginia sent out a press release to the local area newspapers that all rooms were available FREE OF CHARGE to anyone with a valid military ID on November 10 as a Thank you for your Service. This would cover Active Duty, Retired, National Guard, and Reserves. One young Navy family was visiting relatives in Fairmont and booked.
The Gillum House felt this would be a way to not only thank the military, but to also thank the truly “unsung” heroes – their partners who have to take care of everything while their partner/spouse is deployed or on a TDY assignment. November 10 was chosen so the military would be on-site for any Veterans Day activities.

Shinnston's Lincoln High NJROTC Color Guard

In 2009, nine other members of the West Virginia Bed & Breakfast Association joined in the effort making a minimum of one room available on November 10. Joe Stevens of the Media Center222 generously sent out Press Releases to get the word out so the military would know it was available. In 2010, it was decided to take it nationwide – and it went international! We also found a way to include proof of Service for those who served but did not retire (Korea, Viet Nam. Gulf Wars) – a Veterans Administration ID would also be accepted. Once again, Joe Stevens got the word out to the Veterans.
The innkeepers at the Thomas Shepherd Inn in Shepherdstown, West Virginia created a web site to list the participating inns so the military could find participating inns easily. By November 2010, 900 bed & breakfasts in the United States, 11 in Canada, 2 in Mexico, and 1 each in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Paris, France, and Namibia in Africa were participating. In 2011, the program was turned over to The Better Way To Stay (Professional Association of Innkeepers International). In 2011, BBCanada launched the program for Remembrance Day.
Since November 11 is on a Sunday in 2012 and the Official Observance is Monday, November 12 so B & Bs For Vets will be observed on November 11, 2012. Many of the participating innkeepers are Veterans themselves and many inns offer military discounts year round. Reservations will be taken as any other reservation would - meaning all inn policies apply - and on arrival, showing ID resets the rate to FREE OF CHARGE for the room.
ABC News and Forbes have written articles to get the word out to Veterans in 2012.

Discover Woodridge Bed and Breakfast - Louisiana's Better Way to Stay

For many years of traveling we just chose a place to rest our heads, did not give it much thought - location and a chain name was about it.  Then we booked a B and B, our traveling style was changed for ever, and eventually so was our career.   B&B's are like a box of fine chocolates, each one with its own unique flavor.
A Woodridge Welcome starts as you walk up our path.

Spruce It Up! It's a Day of Service

The Governor of West Virginia designated September 29, 2012 as a “Day of Service” and organizations, Cities, and citizens were invited to register their planned activity on the Day of Service. The Shinnston Development Authority registered The Rail-Trail Spruce-up.
It was a “natural” for the Kiwanis Club to come on board and the Key Club at Lincoln High School adopted it as a project. The Garden Club funded the purchase of plants and bulbs, a local trucking company donated a truckload of gravel, a local contractor donated use of equipment and his expertise as a Master Gardener, and City workers and Council members came out to help. There were over 60 volunteers – most of them Key Club.

Volunteers assemble at the Trailhead

The Sue Ann Miller Trailhead will be awash with daffodils in Spring 2013. The trailhead shows the pride of West Virginians in their State and their City. (All work was to be finished by Noon so everyone could watch and/or listen to the West Virginia University’s first Big 12 Conference game. WVU won!!)
Key Club plants and weeds
Shinnston is a small City with a population of about 2250. Come on down and bike/hike our rail-trail, visit our Ferguson Memorial Park with pool, playgrounds, bocce courts, horseshoe pits, walking trail, and cornhole, stop in at the Bice-Ferguson Museum, spend a few minutes meditating at the only Chapel of Perpetual Adoration in WV, or make an appointment to tour the original, on original site circa 1778 2-story log house by calling Gillum House Bed & Breakfast (it is a great place to stay!).
Be sure to visit the Sue Ann Miller Trailhead to see the great spruce-up done on our Day of Service.

Shoot West Virginia to Celebrate Her Birthday!

Head for the hills, stroll through a small town, wade a river, or visit a farm with your digital camera this Saturday, September 15, 2012 - just make sure you are inside the borders of wild and wonderful West Virginia when you take the shot.

If you have a digital camera, you can take part in the celebration of West Virginia's 150th anniversary by taking a shot of your own West Virginia scenery and contributing it (up to 5 photos) to Wonderful West Virginia magazine as candidates for publication in a special issue to be published in June 2013, the month of the state sesquicentennial - both ordinary and extraordinary scenes will be featured as 'slices of Mountain State life'. The shot above was taken by local photographer Denny Crosby, Slainte Images of the Potomac River bridges near Shepherdstown at sunset.

The theme for the statewide photo shoot is 'A Day in the Life of West Virginia' and all photos must be taken within the state borders, between dawn and twilight.  You can see rules and specifics at the website for the magazine, www.WonderfulWV.com

Shepherdstown, WV and the Thomas Shepherd Inn B&B are conveniently located for photo shoots any time of the year - just 90 minutes from DC and Baltimore and a few hours from Pennsylvania and Ohio.   Bring your camera and be prepared to shoot!

How To Plan a Company Picnic Everyone Will Enjoy!

August 21, 2012: It is that time of year again when all the work the HR Departments put into the annual COMPANY PICNIC get the “I do not like these people when I have to work with them every day, why would I go spend a day off with them?” reaction as only a few show up.
The planners of the North-Central Region of WesBanco have the answer and have given me permission to show how to do it. Granted not every company has a Shinnston, West Virginia but look around at the facilities in the area as they did.
WesBanco rented the pavilions at Shinnston’s Ferguson Memorial Park for their company picnic on August 19, 2012.  The large pavilion had registration and tables for the food that was catered and a grill was brought in for the burgers and hot dogs. It was a beautiful day for a picnic – blue skies with a perfect temperature and a slight breeze for perfection.
Some employees hearing the West Fork River Rail-Trail was nearby - actually bordering the Park - brought their bicycles to go for a ride to work up an appetite before dinner was served. Walkers could use the walking trail that rings the Park.

A Bouncy House and the snow cone truck were on the rise above the parking area (and there was a line for snow cones).

One of the busiest places was down at the Bocce Court where a WesBanco Corn Hole Tournament was taking place.

There were even trophies for the winners!

They used two of the small pavilions for other activities. One was set up for sand art for all ages and children activities such as temporary tattoos and duck pond. The other was a popular Bingo pavilion.

Some decided a dip in the zero-grade pool with water slide was the activity of choice.

The WesBanco team had something for everyone of every age group! It was not the old sit around looking at each other and listening to speeches and being bored to death to eat a so-so picnic dinner.

So listen up Picnic Planners everywhere. There is hope. Find a park like Ferguson Park and caterers as good as Casey’s and you too will hear only words such as “It was a great picnic!”

The Scoop: The past reborn, Again.

Olde Town Slidell, LA has had its battles in returning back to its pre-Katrina state, but slowly it is not only coming back but coming back better than before with neat cafe's and art galleries mixed in with antique and craft stores.  And of course there is the night scene too.  But one light blue building with its large picture window remained empty, with memories of Katrina painted on the exterior showing the level of the serge from Lake Pontchartrain and the destruction of all the equipment that the building contained.

Lots of great memories were made in that building, celebrations of birthdays from children to grands, little league and much more.  I would imagine that there is not a local in Slidell that doesn't have a fond memory of a time spent there.  But it is time to celebrate again with another rebirth.  The much loved Olde Town Soda Shop has once again come alive after being wiped out by Hurricane Katrina in Aug. of 2005.

As of the beginning of August the place is alive with customers enjoying the sweet delights of Frank Jackson. This time around, Jackson has teamed up with Morris Hawkins and ACER (Addictions Counseling and Educational Resources) and what a team this has created.  Not only will the town be sweetened with the delights of Jackson, but the shop will be used as a job training site for clients that have been through the ACER program, introducing them back into the work place and establishing work ethics.

What a WIN - WIN for this town, these men and the positive approach to assist individuals.  I could not wait to get a scoop and to share this scoop with all of you.

Come on down the weather is just right for a Soda Shop delight, make some memories!

Foodies love New Orleans in September

Time is drawing near to a fairly new tradition in New Orleans... 'We Live to Eat' Restaurant week is the week of September 10 - 16.  Many of the areas most loved restaurants are participating with 2 course lunches at $20 and 3 course dinners at $35.  Restaurants such as the famous 5 star Commanders Palace, and Galatoires; to the well known Court of Two Sisters and Pat O'Briens in the French Quarter.  You can't miss this opportunity to let your taste buds savor the flavors of some of New Orleans best.

For a complete list of participating restaurants go to: http://www.welivetoeatnola.com/restaurant-week/  - the list along with websites are listed at the bottom.  Each restaurant will feature a special menu for the week.

Recipe - Lime Ginger Syrup

In the heat of the summer, fruit, especially the local stuff like cantalopes, watermelons, peaches and berries is so fresh and sweet that it doesn't need a lot of adornment.  I like to toss my cut-up fresh fruit with a light and simple ginger-lime syrup that can be put together quickly.  Here's the recipe:
Five limes, brought to room temperature
1/3 cup sugar or 1/4 cup honey
1 tsp. grated ginger
1/4 cup water
I do this all into a big measuring cup that can go in the microwave - a 2 or 4 cup measure works best. Use one with a wide mouth so you can juice the limes right over the top and catch all the juice inside.
Juice all five limes, add the sugar, ginger and water and give it a stir.  Zap it in the microwave for 90 seconds to dissolve the sugar and stir again.  Cool before tossing with fruit.
Here's a kitchen tip for juicing lemons and limes that I recently learned.  If you use one of the hand press juicers like the one pictured above, it's easier to get the juice out if you slit the citrus lengthwise, 3 or 4 slits, before you cut it in half and place it in the juicer.  I use a lot of lime juice in the summer (Chilled Strawberry SoupChilled Peach Soup) and this makes the squeezing easier.  Always let the citrus come to room temperature and roll it around on your counter a bit to get the most juice out of it.  Enjoy!

Time to Celebrate - in Slidell Louisiana!

Happy Anniversary to Woodridge Bed and Breakfast!

WOW we are starting our 14th year - 14!!   What started as a pipe dream many years ago, with lots and lots of work, the building once known as Woodridge Academy was transformed into our home and Bed and Breakfast.  Since that time we have welcomed so many wonderful faces, shared some great stories, been a part of many fond reunions and celebrating many unions. We have been blessed.
We've come a long way baby!  From class rooms to 5 spacious suites, from office space to kitchen space and a place to create gourmet breakfasts for your guests.  From a basket ball court to a pavilion for parties and a pool to refresh.  So many things have changed here at Woodridge Bed and Breakfast over the years, but one thing still is the same - our Southern Hospitality.   We look forward to the year ahead and seeing many of our return guests and welcoming new friends.

THEN  -  1994

Woodridge B&B NOW - 2012
Here you see the view of before we purchased.
The yard was baron from the romping of 300 kids at recess, but now is lush and green and even a secret garden to wander through under the canopy of Live Oaks.  I hear them calling you to come relax.

Thanks to the many who have brightened up our place with your wonderful smiles.  We hope to see you again in the near future.

Innkeepers' Dirty Little Secret!

Life stinks, sorry but sometimes it just does
Product Review Magic-Zymes
Making up rooms at The Claiborne House B&B is made easier with Magic Zymes
We use this product at The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast in Virginia

Guaranteed to work, not mask!
The Problem
Now in my eighth ninth year as an innkeeper, a people business, the first 7 years I battled guest smells. Yes, there it is this Innkeepers Dirty Little Secret...but let's face it y'all, some people stink.   I mean, we have smokers, we have the heavily perfumed, the natural-earthy crowd who don't deodorize, and heck even bacon can vaporize and get into your hair and clothes. (Not that we don't love bacon, don't get me wrong!)

So what do we do? We do what everyone does, try everything under the sun to remove odors. All those "guaranteed" all natural products that mask the smell with a worse smell!  You know what I am talkin' about, you have tried some of the same products and they choke you! Bring on asthma attacks, toxic episodes of hives... In my cleaning cupboard upstairs I even have candles that are odor eliminators that I have had to burn before new guests check in.  I assure you I have tried it all!

To answer your question, in this 115+ year old house: Yes, we thoroughly wash the linens, but for those who smoke in their vehicles especially or atomize their strong pungent perfumes, well our guest rooms can be inn-undated with that residual odor.  The curtains, the Persian rugs on the floor, it is in everything everywhere.

So the dilemma is this:  A smoker checks out, and YOU the new guest checks in, little do you know a smoker just spent the last three days in your room.  You are not expecting a stinky room, you are expecting fresh clean and lovely, flowers on the nightstand, brilliant morning light shining through the windows and the one you love in a warm embrace. (I am trying to paint the picture we want you to envision as the perfect B&B stay.)

Breakfast and Bocce - Doesn't Everyone?

May 19, 2012: Here at the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast in West Virginia we are involved with many things that sometimes overlap a bit. THAT is what makes being an innkeeper interesting. One thing that helps is having really nice guests and a husband who will serve what I cooked for breakfast on mornings like today.

Childhood Memories - Create them!

I recently read an article reminiscing about the Sunday drives her family took on the rare Sundays her Father would have a Sunday off work. It brought back memories of my childhood.

We did not take “Sunday drives” as they were called to non-destinations, we would go visiting friends of my parents or they would come visit us. However, we had an annual trip that is a wonderful memory – one that does not remember kids being bored and fidgeting or adults getting cranky from heat and kids – just one huge memory of all the trips in one.

In the 1950s, all vehicles in West Virginia got new license plates in June. Most people ordered them with the form that came in the mail and the license plates arrived via the rural mailman placing the new license plate in your mailbox. Not the Moran family though.

Let's Be Real - Two Tanks!

We hear a lot about One Tank Trips. I believe most people have already seen things that are within one tank of gas round-trip of home. What the Gillum House Bed & Breakfast offers is (for the most part) a Two Tank Trip, and that includes activities.
Shinnston is 5 hours or less from the Beltway, Cleveland, Columbus, Lexington, Pittsburgh – centrally located and only 6+ miles away from I-79. The Two Tank Weekend will allow you to get here, do some site-seeing, and get home. Since we are less than 50 feet from a 17 mile rail-trail you can park the car and enjoy a day of hiking or biking (birding available on the trail). And since we are “Downtown” you can walk to a museum, shops (discount coupons provided) and restaurants (or drive a mile to Jimmy’s). Or if you prefer, follow our routing that will take you, at the farthest point, no more than 40 miles from Shinnston, as you visit 2 wineries (one is also a distillery),

While we do not have the great migratory fly ways here in these mountains like those on the coast (we do have the Raptors of course and plenty of other beautiful birds) we have woodlands and meadows that birds "flock to!"
