What makes a B&B a Better Way to Stay?

B&B's – The Better Way to Stay

There are many reasons this statement is true but I am going to touch on one of them today. Innkeepers! Yes, innkeepers make it the better way to stay. I'm not just tooting my own horn here! As I mentioned in my last blog, I was recently visited by 4 experienced innkeepers and it was having this group of ladies here, each sharing information and items from their own town or region that got me thinking.

We innkeepers spend a lot of our time promoting more than our own B&B's. We share a wealth of knowledge about our areas on any given day. Innkeeper Kathleen Panek of Gillum House was a walking, talking billboard for Shinnston WV while she was here and Shellie Leete of Claiborne House in Rocky Mount VA not only blogs about the Crooked Road but is a blogger for the VA State Parks. Jane McDowell of McDowell-Mearing House in Munice IN shared some wonderful wine made there, yes wine in IN, who would have thought! And Carol Wibbenmeyer of Lodge at Mark Twain Lake near Hannibal Missouri, well Mark Twain left his mark deeply embedded there but the real reason to visit the Lodge is Carol – she is a hoot!

We provide our current guests, as well as those reading our websites, a vast amount of information to make their trip more enjoyable. Whether it is the small town charms or less known local attractions in the big city, innkeepers are your source of that information.  We share this info with smiles on our faces, no blank stares like you may get at the hotel front desk!  We love where we live and we want to share it with the world. Come visit us, ask questions and we will be happy to assist you.

Innspiried by the Innspiring Road Trip Innmates

Woodridge B&B recently had the pleasure of being one of 11 bed and breakfasts being toured by Innspiring Road Trips which consisted of 4 experienced innkeepers. While having never met in person, we all have been members of an innkeepers group that is associated with InnRewards.com. It was wonderful to finally meet and share laughs in person. The 4 innkeepers were: Kathleen Panek of Gillum House Bed and Breakfast in Shinnston West Virginia, Shellie Leete of Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast in Rocky Mount Virginia, Jane Muncie of McDowell-Nearing House Bed and Breakfast in Muncie Indiana and Carol Wibbenmeyer of Lodge at Mark Twain Lake near Hannibal Missouri.
The 4 Innmates in Road Trip shirts from New Orleans!

InnRewards is a reletively new website which is a grassroots effort to reward those great B&B guests we have had the pleasure of hosting in our bed and breakfasts. For more information about this great site, visit the website... check out all the inns from around the world that offer something extra for their guests. (FYI: Woodridge B&B has an offer as well)

During their stay I noted some reasons why B&B's ARE a better way to stay. Stay tuned as I will share some of those reasons in later posts..............

Elope To The 18th Century!

Want a different wedding? Something SPECIAL? Something UNIQUE? Without spending thousands and minus the drama of the relatives?

Elope to the 18th Century.

This was built by 1778 and is original

West Virginia has same day marriage license. Go to the Courthouse, get the license, and have a ceremony performed in an original circa 1778 log house by a Methodist minister. Maximum of 4 (four) people.

Gillum House Bed & Breakfast in Shinnston, West Virginia will have everything arranged and waiting:

·        Minister
·        Bouquet and Boutonniere
·        Video of the ceremony & Stills
·        DVD & CD of Stills
·        Small wedding cake
·        Cider & WV goblet toast
·        Room/Breakfast for Bride & Groom’s Wedding Night

Get married by the fireplace (no fire permitted)

We do need a 7 day notice to schedule the minister and to know you are coming so we can “Bake the Cake!”

Happy guests make happy innkeepers!

The Claiborne House B&B in Rocky Mount Virginia had a stellar morning full of wonderful guests! I am to the point that I always have my camera handy and ask guests if they wouldn't mind a photo or two.
I ask especially if social media is okay, such as Facebook and our Funky Coffee Talk Blog! They are happy to oblige!

Linda and Roy from NC let me get a couple photos before they rode off into the sunset, ahem the Blue Ridge Parkway...they stayed with us 5 years ago, we were their first B&B.

AWESOME AYE!

In case you missed all the chrome on Linda's Star motorcycle, here is another photo...check it out!

Things to Ask Before Booking a B&B

Bill Clinton Room at the Presidents' Quarters Inn

When you’re looking to get away from your busy everyday life and enjoy the luxuries of home away from home, a bed and breakfast may be just the right place to stay. Bed and breakfasts are usually run with a more personalized approach to lodging as they are owned by private individuals who often live on or near the premises- making them quainter and more intimate than most hotels. Many bed and breakfasts are converted homes of historical significance, adding to their charm and intrigue. If you’re looking for the perfect bed and breakfast for your next venture, below are some questions you should consider before booking. Having answers to these questions will enable you to choose the best B&B for you and your loved ones, make the most of your stay, and avoid uncomfortable or frustrating situations that could have been avoided with more information ahead of time. Happy travels!

Innkeeping is not for wimps!

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE
Your innkeeper at The Claiborne House B&B in Virginia http://www.claibornehouse.net/

Things they never told you about being an innkeeper
When people are thinking of taking their first steps toward innkeeping, many around them are quick to give advice. They will warn of the toil involved, the strength of character and the stamina that are needed, the long hours... But however much warning is given, one is always quick to disregard it and shrug one's shoulders because really, how hard can it be?

After years of innkeeping, we have seen hundreds come and go, many who lose it all in the transaction, from marriages to financial ruin; eager at the start but quickly disenchanted and just as eager to get out. But you cannot just walk away, the investment is too large. Only a small percentage of people who walk into the world of innkeeping stay there once faced with this harsh environment.

Below is a list that I compiled of all the realities of day to day life as an innkeeper, based on my own experiences (and here). This is AFTER you own the inn, not the process leading up to it!

What you can expect from making a living as an innkeeper:
1.                You'll must almost always have a smile on your face, to welcome guests who are happily on vacation (even when exhausted, sick or worse).
2.                You'll always meet new people but have few friendships, because your social life deteriorates into non-existence.

So, What Do Innkeepers Do For Fun in Oregon?

Learn to brew beer, of course!
Sandlake Country Inn Innkeeper Ron Emineth at U-Brew Portland

Every now and then, your innkeepers have a night off and we love to play tourist! That's how we know what to recommend to our guests. Besides, we need a little fun now and then!

Yesterday, we took a 1 1/2 hour beautiful drive to Portland, Oregon where we went to Portland U-Brew & Pub. With their expert help, we brewed some grapefruit IPA. In about 3 weeks we'll be able to go back and bottle the beer and take it back to our bed and breakfast, Sandlake Country Inn. How fun will it be to share our brew with some guests! In fact, if it goes well, we're going to create our own beer recipe, label it and sell it here at our bed and breakfast. How does Sandlake Country Ale sound?!

And you think we're kidding?

You know where to find us.

So what do Innkeepers do for fun?

While all innkeepers feel our work IS fun there are times when we just need to get away for the day.  So what do we do?  Well this innkeeper likes to play tourist in our own town...and beyond.  Scooping out some neat places for our guests to visit while here.
Monday was a perfect day to play hooky....  Here are some photos of places we went, things we did and where we recommend you go when visiting our part of the planet.

Irish Blessing & Heritage - New Orleans style

New Orleans is rich with Irish heritage, it historically has had the largest Irish population in the south and attributed to 25% of the New Orleans population in 1861.  It is then not surprising that areas such as the Irish Channel have been adorned with the name.  To learn more about the history and culture the Irish brought to the city of New Orleans, visit The Irish Cultural Museum located in the French Quarter.

May you always have...Walls for the winds; A roof for the rain...Tea beside the fire ...Laughter to cheer you ...Those you love near you...And all your heart might desire.   An Irish blessing
New Orleans celebrates the day in our own unique way! Irish walk the streets with white and green beads, green carnations and dishing out kisses to the fillies as they pass by.   The larger parades of floats loaded with revelers and sacks of cabbage, carrots, onions and potatoes... if you're lucky you will go home with a good start to your Irish stew.

Make your plans now to be here next Paddy's Day, and celebrate like the Irishmen.

Two-ingredient Banana Oat Cookies

With two-ingredient recipes all the rage, I decided to try one that was posted on an innkeepers' forum recently.  The base recipe uses only banana and oats, making a cookie that is vegan, dairy-free and can be made gluten-free if you use gluten-free oats.  A good cookie to have in your arsenal for special diets (with thanks to Lauren at The Burlap Bag), the recipe couldn't be simpler:

2 large ripe bananas, mashed
1 cup quick-cooking oats

Mix together, drop onto greased or parchment-lined cookie sheet, bake at 350 in a preheated oven for 15 minutes.

I added in 1 tsp. cinnamon and a handful of dried cranberries, and I HIGHLY recommend adding some of your own favorites, because the cookie is a little one-note (of bananas) without them.  Chocolate chips, flax seed, peanut butter - I have seen recipes that added all of those in with excellent results.

Try them and let us know what you think!

Digging up the past in NE Louisiana

It is almost mid February and the long winter is almost behind us.  Have you started planning your next trip?  Why not combine a little history in with the fun.  Did you know that there is an ancient historical site in the US that dates back to the Egyptian Pyramids, before the Mayan Pyramids?  Nestled on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi just northwest of Jackson MS and northeast of Monroe LA is Poverty Point.   A vast 400 acre site, integrated complex of earthen monuments, constructed 3,100 – 3,700 years ago dating back to pre-Mayan civilization.

For more information see:  http://woodridgebb.blogspot.com/2013/02/ancient-historical-site-part-of-100.html

Poverty Point is about 250 miles north of Woodridge B&B.  Take in lots of history by putting Poverty Point in your plans pre or post your stay.

B&B Blogging Rock Stars

Keep an eye on the sidebar of this blog, you will begin to see a series of blog articles by some of your favorite innkeepers on 101 Things to Do, or 100 things to do within 100 miles of the inn, and so on. Two of them below:
http://blog.sandlakecountryinn.com/
Sandlake Country Inn on the Oregon Coast
http://blog.claibornehouse.net/
Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast in Virginia
While this is a time consuming project, this is another example of how:

Innkeeper innsight is worth its weight in gold!

I hope you will follow these series and learn more about the innteresting and sometimes quirky off-the-beaten track  hings to do and see as day trips from these beautiful inns.

As more B&B's get on-board and take on this challenge, I will try to update this space with their URL's.

Just added: Woodridge B&B in Slidell Louisiana "100+ Things to do."
Just added: White Cedar Inn in Freeport Maine "100 x 100"

The reason some inns have a larger area (100 mile radius of the inn) is that many of you are on road trips and love to get out and explore! If there is something historical or noteworthy to see and you were here, but didn't know about it, we would be upset you missed it!

EXPERIENCE THE DIFFERENCE AT A B&B, WE LOVE WHAT WE DO!
